Toledo

THIS is a very underrated place, an incredible sight as your bus from Madrid (one hour) comes over the hill and you see it laid out before you.
Toledo is full of ancient buildings and some of El Greco’s best works. He lived and worked here, got rich and then poor again. He liked to live it up and wouldn’t sit down to dinner without a band of musicians playing for him while he ate. Rock star habits that end up making you skint. But very nice while you can afford it. I digress.
It’s also very olde worlde with coats of arms and heraldry, one of the biggest cathedrals in the world which will leave you gobsmacked if you step inside, and narrow, cobbled lanes. Reminds you how varied Spain is.
